Ayurvedic Bodywork comes from ancient Indian treatments and protocols for preventing and reversing illness. Below are various treatments used in Ayurvedic bodywork for Panchakarma and Rasayana (rejuvenation) therapies.

Every client will receive a medical evaluation prior to spa therapies.

Ayurvedic Massage—Abyangha

An ancient treatment using warm herbalized oils (selected according to the body type) is designed to improve circulation, remove toxins, calm the nervous system and enhance immunity.

This soothing synchronized massage allows the therapeutic qualities of the herbs and oils to penetrate deeply into your body promoting healing at the micro-cellular level. This is commonly followed by a steam bath in the steam room, or in a steam chamber in the treatment room with herbs especially suited for your body type.  This is a luxurious and highly beneficial treatment.  It is  an essential Ayurvedic treatment.

Shiro (head) Dhara (stream)


Oil Treatment

Shirodhara: The client receives a head and neck massage. Then warm oil poured over the forehead, this therapy induces vasodilatation within the brain, enabling increased flow of oxygen to the brain and nourishing the central nervous system. Said to be the treatment of the third eye.

Indications: Insanity, insomnia, diseases of the head, eye, ear, and mouth

Rice Bolus Steam Treatment—Pinda Swedana

Pinda Swedana / Navarakizhi: Bolus of rice cooked with herbal decoction and milk
sashtikasali(medicinal rice)is processed in the decoction of sida rhombifolia and milk, until the liquid part gets completely evaporated. The remaining mixture (decoction and milk) is kept on low heat. The cooked rice is made in to 4 equal parts and bundles are prepared out of it. The client is asked to lie on the treatment table, and then abhyana is given. The rice boluses are tolerably warmed in the mixture. Then a massage is done all over the body with the bolus.

Indications: Sciatica, low back ache, Arthritis, spasticity, hemiplegia, joint disorders, Neurological disorders

Heart Chakra Basti—Uro Basti

50 minutes total time includes a gentle head, neck, chest and face massage followed by basti application.

Urobasti: (oil retention over the heart region) Administered on the chest. In this treatment, a small ring of dough is made on the chest, around the region of the sternum and medicated oil is poured into it and kept there for a specific time.

*Physical pain felt in the chest should be looked at by a primary health care practitioner*

Indications: Pain in the heart region due to emotional stress or the loss of a loved one.

Root Chakra Basti—Keta Basti

50 minutes total time includes a gentle back massage followed by basti application.

Katibasti: (oil retention over the sacrum region) Oil is poured into a dam dough is made and placed on the sacrum region and kept there for a specific time.

Indications: Low back ache, sciatica, osteoarthritis of the hip

Eye Basti—Netra Basti

50 minutes total time includes a gentle back massage followed by basti application.

Netra Basti / Akshi tarpana: Application of medicated oil or ghee on the eyes, making a ring of flour paste around the eyes then having the person open the eyes and allow the oil to go in.

Indications: Diseases of the eyes like dryness, burning sensation and it helps to clear the vision

Herbal Scrub

Exfoliation
Herbal Exfoliation (Udvartana)

Udvartana: The person is massaged with dried, finely pulverized herbal powder (churna). The uniqueness of this therapy is that the stroking motion during the massage is upwards or towards the heart. After this process the client is given a mild oil massage all over the body. 

Indications: Kapha disorders, obesity, hemiplegia, parkinsonism, rheumatoid arthritis

Herbal Paste Application

Lepana: This is a treatment in which a medicated herbal paste is applied over the entire body and allowed to dry. It is then removed which leaves the muscles and fascia revitalized and flexible.

Localized Lepa / Upanahasweda: is when herbal paste is applied to specific parts of the body to treat organs and disorders of the joints and skin. A moderately thick layer of the hot paste is applied to the affected part. Often the area is then bandaged with cloth or leaves.

Indications: obesity as well as various types of inflammatory conditions, skin diseases, arthritis, gout, muscular strains, and circulatory imbalances

Full Body Steam—Swedana ($35.00 add-on to any treatment)

Ooshmasweda / Bashpasweda: Steam of body but not the head. This is full body steam where the head is kept cool at all times. The head is the site of Pitta and should never experience direct heat.

Indications: Sciatica, low back ache, arthritis, spasticity, hemiplegia

Oiling Ears ($20)

Add-on only, purchase oil from the front desk and give to therapist.

Karnapoorana: Means filling the ears with medicated oil or liquid.

Indications: Otorrhea (ear drainage), tinnitus and deafness

Oiling Nasal Passages ($20)

Add-on only, purchase oil from the front desk and give to therapist.

Skin Brushing ($20)

Add-on only, purchase brushes from the front desk and give to therapist.

Lymphatic skin brushing, before a massage helps remove dead skin and increases the amount of oil absorbed in to the body. Increases the immune system and aids in detoxifying the body.
