Detoxification Program
Your health is one of the most valuable things you possess, and yet most of us spend little time understanding how to maintain our bodies in optimal health until it begins to fail. Toxins are substances that cause harmful effects on our bodies. We are exposed to toxins from a variety of sources every day: environmental, poor lifestyle choices, internal toxins, and toxins created from our emotions.
Signs that your detoxification ability might be impaired:
| Constipation | Skin disorders | Frequent colds, flues, sinus infections |
| Gas/bloating | Fatigue | Muscle and joint pain |
| Diarrhea | Anger, depression, irritability | Fibromyalgia |
| Nausea | Dark circles under the eyes | Insomnia |
| Heartburn | Blood sugar and hormonal imbalances | Chemical sensitivities |
| Elevated cholesterol | PMS | Asthma |
| Overweight/underweight |
If you identify with many of the signs listed above, a portion of your impaired health may be due to inadequate clearance of toxins within the liver-gastrointestinal systems. Our programs will show you how easy it is to reduce and even eliminate most of the burden that these unwanted toxins cause-preventing optimal health.
Some of the modalities we use to build a detoxification program for your unique needs and body type are:
- Our signature 28 day total body cleanse with all natural organic nutritional supplements and medical food.
- Individualized body typing and an eating plan to match
- Nutritional counseling
- Colon hydrotherapy
- Lymphatic massage and steam treatments
- Pancha Karma (a week long Ayurvedic body work detoxification program individualized to your needs)
- Heavy Metal Detoxification
- Weight Loss program
- Laboratory testing to uncover the root cause of illness
Many times your HSA (Health Spending Account) or Flex-plan at work will pay for all of these treatments. Keesha is happy to write a letter of medical necessity for you to utilize your benefit.

Digestive System Renewal Program
“Death begins in the colon.” --Elie Metchnikoff (Russian Nobel Prize Winning Biologist)
Most eastern and naturopathic medical systems all agree that if the digestive system is unhealthy then the rest of the body and mind will follow soon after. This is where the seat of both health and disease rests.
The GI tract has a surface area 200 times greater than our skin and is exposed to the external environment via the food we eat. Within your lifetime, you will consume between 30-50 tons of food. All of this food is part of the external and potentially harmful environment. It is the responsibility of the GI tract to break down this food, absorb the beneficial nutrients and, at the same time, prevent harmful compounds from entering the blood stream. All of these functions need to be carried out efficiently to maintain optimal health. The GI tract has four main functions, which can be referred to as The Pillars of GI Health. These four pillars are: Digestion, Elimination, Microflora Balance and Gut Integrity. They are called pillars because it is upon these and their inter-relationship that the health of the GI system…and consequently the whole body…is supported.
If you identified with any of the symptoms above, your digestive system needs to be restored. There are more serious symptoms associated with more serious issues in the GI tract that are too numerous to list here. The Digestive System Renewal Program at Fern Life Center looks at keeping all “4 Pillars of GI health” strong and utilizes the “4 Rs” to effect renewal:
| The 4 Pillars of GI Health | The 4 Rs of Renewal |
|---|---|
| 1. Digestion | 1. Remove (allergens/toxins/organisms) |
| 2. Elimination | 2. Replace (acid, enzymes, bile) |
| 3. Microflora | 3. Re-Inoculate (Pre and Probiotics) |
| 4. Gut Integrity | 4. 4. Repair (inflammation, absorption, immunity) |
We may utilize some of the following modalities to help you reach optimum health:
- State of the art diagnostic testing,
- Targeted nutritional supplementation
- Colon hydrotherapy
- Stress reduction techniques
- Dietary protocols

Adrenal and Thyroid Recovery Program
Adrenal fatigue plays a role in chronic fatigue, hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, depression, menopausal symptoms, PMS, Osteoporosis, Andropause (male menopause), insulin resistance, seasonal depression and any other endocrine imbalance you can name. Cortisol, one of the adrenal hormones that is released during states of stress is implicated in cardiovascular disease too. Flattened cortisol levels have been shown to precede heart attacks in 50% of cases and it doubles the risk of future myocardial infarctions (MIs). The lower the cortisol, the lower the chance of survival post cardiac arrest. It is now thought that what has been called chronic fatigue syndrome is actually adrenal fatigue:
There are several different types of stress:
o Physical: injury, surgery, allergies, sedentary or extreme activity
o Emotional: job, family, money, death, illness, marriage
o Lifestyle: lack of sleep, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, alcohol
o Aging: menopause (why do some women glide through and others have 10 years of symptoms?)
o Prescription medications
Symptoms of elevated cortisol: Extreme=cushings disease
o Excessive energy
o Anxiety and panic
o Abdominal weight gain
o Inhibits release of inflammatory cytokines
o Difficulty falling asleep from a racing mind
Symptoms of dampened cortisol: Extreme=addisons disease
o Fatigue
o Irritability
o Foggy mind
o Immune exhaustion
o Low energy
o Lack of initiative
o Salt cravings
This doesn’t happen overnight, it happens in stages:
Stages of adrenal depletion:
o Stage 1: elevated cortisol, low DHEA: Poor sleep, loss of muscle mass, truncal weight gain, facial weight gain, glucose intolerance, depression, fluid retention
o Stage 2: low normal levels-flat
o Stage 3: low cortisol and DHEA all day: Fatigue, carb cravings, mental fogginess, dark circles under yes, headaches, salt cravings, exercise intolerance, poor healing, heartburn.
A flat adrenal curve and elevated nighttime cortisol and metastatic breast cancer are tied. What else happens when there is too much or too little cortisol on board? Come in to Fern Life Center and get tested and get your life back on track.

Neurotransmitter Rebalancing Program
Neurotransmitters are chemicals in our brains that work as messengers and are responsible for appetite, sleep, moods and behaviors. When these chemicals are not balanced we will feel brain fogged, unfocused, have “tired and/or wired” energy levels, and might struggle with weight issues. Research shows that neurotransmitters influence our moods and unsatisfactory levels of certain neurotransmitters have been identified in patients with emotional disorders and mental illness.
What are Neurotransmitters? How do they function?
Our brain contains neurons (specialized nerve cells), which receive information, process it, and transmit it to other cells. These cells do not speak directly to each other, so they use messengers called neurotransmitters which bridge the gaps (called synapses) between neurons to relay important information. If messages are not relayed properly the following issues might occur:
- Obesity
- Migraines
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Adrenal dysfunction
- Fibromyalgia and chronic pain issues
- Eating disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Psychosis
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders (generalized, panic, OCD)
Mood affecting neurotransmitters are:
- Acetylcholine: Regulates voluntary movement, sleep, memory, and learning. Too much acetylcholine is present in depression , and too little is present in patients with dementia.
- Serotonin: Helps to regulate appetite, sleep, impulsive behavior, aggression, and mood. Too little serotonin is present in cases of depression and anxiety disorder, in particular obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
- Dopamine: Regulate learning, focus and movement. Excessive levels of dopamine are present in patients with schizophrenia ; too little dopamine is associated with depression, as well as the tremors exhibited by patients with Parkinson's disease.
- Epinephrine (adrenaline): Regulates glucose metabolism and energy levels; low levels are linked to depression.
- Norepinephrine (noradrenalin): Regulates appetite and alertness; low levels are found in patients with depression, while excessive norepinephrine has been found in patients with schizophrenia.
- GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid): GABA is known to inhibit anxiety and excitation. Too little GABA is associated with anxiety disorders.
- Endorphins: These are the "happy" neurotransmitters that promote feelings of contentment and pleasure; they are also involved in pain relief.
Causes of neurotransmitter imbalance:
The usual culprits we know as the standard American diet (SAD) and poor stress coping habits are most often responsible for neurotransmitter imbalances. Since neurotransmitters are made from amino acids, which come from protein, it is vital to have a good dietary intake of clean protein, vitamins and minerals. In addition, medications, drugs and alcohol, hormone imbalances, genetics, and heavy metal toxicity can all play a role in neurotransmitter depletion.
Diagnosis of neurotransmitter imbalance:
Western medicine uses prescription medications to treat most of the issues listed above. Many times multiple medication “cocktails” are used. Please watch the documentary “The Medicated Child” to see that this happens with children as well as with adults. There is no western laboratory testing that will show neurotransmitter levels so they can be treated directly, so medications are “tried” one at a time until finally patients feel so frustrated that they are willing to live with feeling numb and with the many side effects these medications usually come with. However there is neurotransmitter testing available which provides a simple tool for determining the precise cause of the symptoms by pinpointing exactly which neurotransmitters are out of balance. This testing is from the functional medicine world and requires a blood or urine sample that is often times covered by insurance plans, making them very affordable.
Neurotransmitter testing gets to the cause of the condition which frees medical providers from having to throw medications at an issue until one of them finally works. With this kind of diagnostic precision medications are many times not even necessary. Natural supplements, dietary changes, exercise plans, stress reduction interventions and behavioral or hypnotherapy might be all that is necessary to come back into balance and have the quality of life you have always desired.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Program
Feel younger, more vital and look younger than your years by getting your hormones back on track!
Functional Endocrinology is a term that I have come to love. It means that there is no hormone producing organ or gland in the body that operates in isolation. It means they all work together in the context of the environment the body and mind are functioning in. Anyone who doesn’t address the thyroid, the adrenals, stress reduction, weight management, nutrition, medications AND the reproductive system in a talk about bio identical hormone therapy isn’t giving you the whole picture.
Hormone imbalance is ALWAYS related to stress. 5 people having the same experience will react differently to the same stressor. There is a test for stress. It’s a cortisol saliva test that will identify how your body is responding to how you are doing in any given day. Stress promotes aging, oxidizes DNA, and it is linked with almost all causes of death. In western medicine we wait for it to create disease, then we treat the symptoms of the disease. Stress makes us crave carbs, snap at our kids, drink cups and cups of coffee, and then have to use alcohol to calm down at the end of the day. If you go on a vacation, your life is still waiting for you when you get back. This is the cause of hormone imbalance.
*Many medical providers are not properly trained. There has been over dosing of bio-identical hormone therapy for the past few years that many of us then have to clean up when our patients come to us in a bigger mess than when they started. Large doses of any hormone will make you feel great for about 6 months, but then it will store in your fat tissue and begin to be released randomly. I have hundreds of clients who come to me in this state and I have to begin by detoxing them and then re-starting.

Ayurvedic and Anti-Aging Program
According to Ayurveda, everyone is born with a unique combination of the five elements (space, air, fire, water, and Earth); these are called doshas (or your constitution). Your birth constitution is known as your Prakruti in Sanskrit. Your Vikruti becomes imbalanced throughout your life due to your diet, patterns of exercise, lifestyle, time of day, time of life, environment and climate, relationships and your emotional processing of them, and many other variables. Your Vikruti changes often and can be brought back into harmony to more closely match your Prakruti through lifestyle modifications and herbs. One of the most effective ways of bringing balance to your life is to alter your diet to match the needs of your unique constitution. Ayurveda considers the tastes and qualities of foods and what effects these have on the doshas. The best way to find out your body type is through pulse diagnosis by a qualified practitioner. Keesha Ewers, ARNP has a Master’s degree in Ayurvedic medicine and is an expert at pulse diagnosis. To get an idea about each of the body types you can also take our dosha quiz.
Knowing your body type and how to keep it in balance will keep you healthy and feeling years less than your chronological age year round. Ayurveda is a 10,000 year old body of knowledge that leads to empowerment and self-realization. You will learn how to exercise, eat, sleep, reduce your stress, and go through seasonal and life changes with grace and ease. The modalities common to Ayurveda that are utilized at Fern Life Center are:
- Detoxification
- Massage
- Steam
- Shirodhara
- Nutritional counseling
- Nutritional herbs and supplements
- Colon hydrotherapy
- Pancha Karma
- Meditation
- Pranayama
- Self-massage
- Holisitic skin care to match your body type (Fern Simples)
- yoga
Ayurveda is Eastern wisdom that can help with hard to treat issues like auto-immune diseases, infertility, aging, weight, digestive issues, heart disease, diabetes, skin disorders, pain, joint inflammation, depression, anxiety and much more.

Cardio-Metabolic Rejuvenation Program
The past century has seen dramatic advances in medical science. Over that time Western societies have realized significant improvements in life expectancy and quality of life. Numerous infectious diseases have been identified and are no longer a major threat to most countries. However, in the past few decades those advances have slowed and even reversed in some populations. The recent emergence of metabolic-related chronic disease patterns is on the verge of overwhelming a medical model that was designed to manage acute and infectious disease processes. Perhaps the past century has not been as kind to our health as we once thought.
The advances over this century have been accompanied by many negative health trends. Increased caloric intake, especially of refined and processes foods, has led to population that is over-fed and under-nourished. Sedentary lifestyles resulting from less physical labor have reduced population fitness while increasing obesity. Changes in working patterns, sleep and social demands have added unprecedented demands on the body’s stress response mechanisms, leading to adrenal fatigue and hormone imbalances. Environmental toxins have also placed a heavy burden on our detoxification pathways, leading to an array of sensitivities, allergies and syndromes unknown to previous generations. We have now learned that these factors are interrelated and synergistic, producing negative health outcomes much earlier in this generation than ever before.
We can no longer assess risks for individual diseases while ignoring the complex relationships between chronic disease patterns. This is best evidenced by the emergence of the term “cardio-metabolic risk”, which encompasses the risk relationship between the classic definitions of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Under this new umbrella and its related terms (Metabolic syndrome, Syndrome X, Insulin Resistant Syndrome), the integrative clinician of today is taught to understand the disease process rather than simply its manifestations.
Cardio-Metabolic Risk is evaluated at Fern Life Center through:
- Diagnostic laboratory testing
- Body evaluation measurements
- Vital Signs
- Consideration of the history, family history and lifestyle risk factors
Treatment includes:
- Supplement protocols that include the treatment of pre-diabetes, diabetes, high cholesterol, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and weight.
- Lifestyle intervention education
- Dietary and nutritional counseling
- Stress reduction techniques
Many people come to see Keesha to get off of the damaging statins, anti-hypertensives, and diabetes medications they are on. Keesha NEVER stops prescription medications without first correcting the underlying imbalance and treating the root cause of the illness that made these medications necessary in the first place. Please do not take yourself off of medications to go onto herbs or supplements you read about in magazines or hear about in the media. This process must be done gradually and under the guidance of medical professionals trained in integrative medicine.

Weight Loss Program
Say goodbye to your last diet! Fern Life Center’s Ideal Protein Plan will reverse the hormone imbalance that is causing you to keep your weight on.
There is one driving factor that contributes, above all else, to the epidemic of obesity (or as Dr. Mark Hyman puts it, diabesity) and other chronic illnesses we see today. By addressing this one problem you may reverse many of your health problems, even if you don’t do anything else. Conventional medicine isn’t monitoring this problem and now our population’s girth size has grown collectively over the last 30 years. We cannot continue to treat the symptoms of obesity, or diabesity, we must treat the underlying cause…which is insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is only one warning sign from the body that the whole endocrine system, or hormone regulatory system, is out of balance. What are some ways to know if you have insulin resistance?
- Are you working out and not losing weight?
- Do you have mood swings and food cravings?
- Do you have thyroid issues or symptoms of estrogen dominance (refer to my other blogs on these subjects)?
- Is your waist size larger than it should be?
- Do you look down and see your belly?
- Do you or have you gotten hypoglycemic before meals?
- Do you have high blood pressure and or high cholesterol?
If this problem goes unchecked, it can lead to diabetes.
Come in today and find out how to lose weight, normalize your hormones, detox, and learn to keep your weight off…in one program that is less expensive than all of the current weight loss programs out there today. For more information, see our blogs related to weight loss: Obesity and Insulin Resistance, Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Detox and Renew, Adrenal Fatigue.

Allergy Elimination Without Needles Program
After spending several years treating patients for a variety of inflammatory diseases, we began to see a correlation with digestion and inflammation. Once an offending food or substance was eliminated from the diet, the skin, joint, behavioral, digestive, or hormonal issue would disappear. The question then arose, “Does a person who is responding poorly to something like gluten then have to avoid it FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES?” The answer was sometimes yes. This seemed like a rather severe life sentence for many, so we began searching for a way to completely cure some of these allergies. We discovered NAET. There has been remarkable success at Fern Life Center in the removal of allergies using this very simple technique of reorganizing the body’s neurological pathways and letting the body know it no longer needs to rally an immune response.
So what is NAET?
Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique, also known as NAET®, is a non-invasive, drug free, natural solution for the elimination of allergies of all types and intensities using a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupressure, allopathy, chiropractic, nutritional, and kinesiological disciplines of medicine. One allergen is treated at a time. If you are not severely immune deficient, you may need just one treatment to desensitize one allergen. A person with mild to moderate amount of allergies may take about 15-20 office visits to desensitize 15-20 food and environmental allergens. Basic essential nutrients are treated during the first few visits. Chemicals, environmental allergens, vaccinations, immunizations, etc. are treated after completing about ten basic essential nutrients. NAET® can successfully eliminate adverse reactions to egg, milk, peanuts, penicillin, aspirin, mushrooms, shellfish, latex, grass, ragweed, flowers, perfume, animal dander, animal epithelial, make-up, chemicals, cigarette smoke, pathogens, heat, cold, and other environmental agents. It may take several office visits to desensitize a severe allergen.
*Please read, Say Goodbye to Allergies or Say Goodbye to Illness by Devi Nambudripad if you are making an appointment for NAET treatments so you fully understand the process. Both books are available for purchase at Fern Life Center.
