Last week’s radio show with Sydney Ross Singer galvanized me into action. Dr. Singer is a cultural anthropologist who examines how cultures create disease in different societies. He and his wife published a very large study in 1995 that clearly linked our high incidence of breast cancer with our habit of wearing constricting bras. Bras “support” by re-shaping the natural way the breast sits and cuts off the lymphatic system that is in charge of draining toxins from the body. We already know estrogen is implicated in many kinds of breast cancer. We also know that there is many times lymphatic involvement. It has been shown that women with fibrocystic breast disease will have their cysts incidence reduce if they take off their bras. Why then do we persist in a habit that Dr. Singer compares to foot binding from ancient Chinese culture or the use of corsets in the last several centuries? The answer is the marketing giant that feeds the fashion industry.
Singer has written numerous groundbreaking books on the cultural causes of disease, including the internationally recognized bestseller, Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras. It is a fascinating read. I have attached a link to Donna Eden’s recommended bras link. However, these bras, though without the underwire, are still constricting. The idea is to let the breasts move and breath. Singer recommends using camisoles and loose fitting pull over bras (not tight sports bras) that allow for some breathability and are made from natural fibers. Cancer risk doubles if you wear a bra to bed at night! So let the “ladies” go free at night.
I have also attached a link to a documentary that was done in the 1990s detailing the link between cancer and bras in the U.K. Read this and then join me in a 30-day-go-braless challenge! We will have Dr. Singer back on Healthy YOU! Radio in one month as a call-in show to tell him our experiences with getting rid of the bra.
